Network Engineer

Job Purpose:  The Network Engineer position designs and supports Ethernet and VoIP network solutions for a telecommunications and Internet Service Provider (ISP) network. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design, test, and configure customer premises and central office solutions that deliver telephone, Internet, and private network solutions to customers: Ethernet backbone and Internet pipes, Customer Metro Ethernet circuits, DWDM Backbone, GPON voice and data circuits, MPLS
  • Test, document, and deploy new systems and applications into production
  • Help educate NOC support staff to better monitor the network and troubleshoot problems
  • Monitor and optimize local and wide-area networks for optimal performance and maximum availability
  • Troubleshoot, evaluate and resolve customer and central office network performance and capacity issues; identify problem areas, bottlenecks and network problems; use various network tools to provide resolution for system issues
  • Provide solution requirements to extend monitoring tools for new technical solutions
  • Perform other duties as determined by management 

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Five to ten years of experience with administration, implementation and troubleshooting of Internet Protocols (IP) routers, Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches and firewalls
  • Experience with design, implementation and troubleshooting of IP network routing policies
  • Experience configuring and supporting VoIP networks is highly regarded
  • Understanding of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Network Address Translation (NAT) and IP network Quality of Service (QoS) policies
  • Solid understanding of Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS)
  • Solid knowledge of L2 switching and spanning tree technologies
  • Cisco Certified Network Analyst (CCNA) certification required, CCNP preferred
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff including senior management, internal and external customers
  • Must be able to demonstrate attention to accuracy on all duties and responsibilities
  • Ability to analyze and define problems, prioritize work flow, multitask, meet deadlines and remain flexible
